Introduction: We aim to provide an overview of the clinical characteristics and treatment of pediatric acute mastoiditis (AM) and its complications in the prevaccinal pneumococcal period. Materials and methods: Retrospective case series. An analysis of pediatric patients with AM treated at a university tertiary care center from 2008 to 2018 was performed. Results: The research included 121 children, and 27.3% of them had some form of complication. The mean age at presentation of AM was 3.7 years (range = 0-18 years). The most common extracranial complication of AM was a subperiosteal abscess (n = 25, 75.8%) and the most common intracranial complication was meningoencephalitis (n = 2, 6%). The most common pathogen isolated in the complicated AM was Streptococcus pneumoniae (n = 17, 51.5%). A total of 60% of patients reported antibiotic use before hospital admission, mostly third-generation cephalosporins (37.5%). There was a statistically significant difference between age group and occurrence of complications (P = .001). Females had complications more frequently than males (P = .035). There were no statistically significant differences in levels of inflammatory parameters (C-reactive protein and leukocyte count) between patients with or without complications (P = .373 and P = .124; respectively). All patients with complications of AM were surgically treated. Mortality was 0% and all children completely recovered. Conclusion: Extracranial and intracranial complications of AM required surgical treatment and extended antibiotic therapy. Inflammation parameters did not have a predictive role in identifying children with complications of AM. Further investigations will determine whether the introduction of the mandatory pneumococcal vaccine in our country has led to a reduction in the incidence of AM and its complications.

(1) Background: Hoarseness is not uncommon in children, especially at school age, as communication with peers is intensified. It is caused by improper use or overuse of the vocal apparatus. (2) Methods: The study included 85 hoarse children aged 6-12 (study group) and 240 healthy children (control group) of the same age. The study group underwent a detailed medical history, phoniatric examination, larynx fiber endoscopy, allergy treatment and the Pediatric Voice-Related Quality of Life questionnaire, modified by Jasmina Stojanovic. (3) Results: Our modified questionnaire revealed the significance of parental perception of a voice disorder in a child after organized activities. Using our modified questionnaire, we were able to determine the most frequent form of a voice disorder in children-speaking too loudly-is often neglected by the environment and can lead to an overall lower life quality. (4) Conclusions: As the presence of hoarseness impairs the quality of life in the pediatric population, awareness of a voice disorder must be recognized and treated on time to overcome the possible side effects on a child's psychological and emotional development.

BACKGROUND: Strong epidemiological evidence suggests that air pollution plays a significant role in the exacerbation of allergic respiratory diseases. This study aimed to assess the potential relationship between daily levels of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and emergency department (ED) visits for allergic diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data regarding ED visits for allergic respiratory diseases were routinely collected from the EDs in the Zlatibor district, and the General Hospital, Uzice. The daily average concentrations of SO2 were obtained from the regional automatic air quality monitoring stations. All data were collected from June 2012 to July 2014. A time-stratified case-crossover design was used. Crude odds ratios (ORs) and ORs adjusted for weather conditions were calculated using conditional logistic regression. RESULTS: Statistically significant associations were seen between 0-day lagged exposure to SO2 and ED visits for all allergic diseases (OR = 1.62; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05-2.48; P = 0.028) and between 2-day lagged exposure to SO2 and ED visits for asthma with allergic rhinitis (OR = 2.00; 95% CI: 1.03-3.88; P = 0.042). These results were adjusted for temperature, temperature2, and humidity. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that short-term exposure to SO2 conferred an increased risk of ED visits for allergic respiratory diseases, particularly for asthma with concomitant allergic rhinitis.

Background and Objectives: Many epidemiological studies have shown a positive association between black carbon (BC) and the exacerbation of allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma. However, none of the studies in Serbia examined this relationship yet. The aim of this study was to examine the associations between BC and emergency department (ED) visits for allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma in the Uzice region of Serbia. Materials and Methods: A time-stratified case-crossover design was applied to 523 ED visits for allergic rhinitis and asthma exacerbation that occurred in the Uzice region of Serbia between 2012-2014. Data regarding ED visits were routinely collected in the Health Center of Uzice. The daily average concentrations of BC were measured by automatic ambient air quality monitoring stations. Odds ratios (ORs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using conditional logistic regression adjusted for the potential confounding influence of weather variables (temperature, humidity, and air pressure). Results: Statistically significant associations were observed between ED visits for allergic rhinitis and 2-day lagged exposure to BC (OR = 3.20; CI = 1.00-10.18; p = 0.049) and allergic asthma and 3-day lagged exposure to BC (OR = 3.23; CI = 1.05-9.95; p = 0.041). Conclusion: Exposure to BC in the Uzice region increases the risk of ED visits for allergic rhinitis and asthma, particularly during the heating season.
